Welcome to the fourth edition of the TuSimple Intern Spotlight series!

This series is meant to share stories of interns across TuSimple; about their background, their work, and ultimately, why they decided to join the TuSimple team following their internship. Today’s post is all about Hailey, an intern this summer at TuSimple.

Meet Hailey!

Hailey Makechnie is an intern on the Marketing and Communications team. She is heading into her senior year this fall at Clemson University and planning to graduate in the spring with a B.S. in International Management.

What first sparked your interest in working at TuSimple?

I found out about TuSimple and the position through a listing on LinkedIn for a marketing intern. The opportunity to work for a company on the cutting edge of technology and transportation was interesting to me, as I spent last summer interning at a fleet management company. I was also intrigued to try out remote work.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

The marketing and communications team here at TuSimple does not make me feel as if I am just “the intern.” I feel valued. I’m getting hands-on experience that I do not think I could get at just any company. This is also the first time I’ve been a part of a team that is solid on regular communication and routine weekly meetings. I’ve enjoyed being in the loop pertaining to what the team as a whole is working on and accomplishing.

What was the impact you’re most proud of to have contributed to during your internship?

Currently, I am working on a competitive analysis. The goal is for it to be a guide on how we communicate our strategy to the various firms to whom we outsource work. Hopefully, it will be helpful in future initiatives and it can be a way for me to leave my mark!

Which TuSimple value (Safeguard, Own, Communicate, Collaborate, Innovate) resonated most within your intern team?

Collaborate. There have been several occasions on our weekly huddles were a member of the team is describing a project they are working on and another member offers their support. I love that culture and have tried to emulate it in my interactions.

What advice would you give to aspiring interns and professionals at TuSimple?

I haven’t been turned down for a coffee chat yet! A mentor of mine once told me that you would be hard-pressed to find an employee who would not want to meet with interns and that most people find itflattering for someone to be curious about your life experiences. As an intern, it is valuable to learn from those more senior. Do not be afraid to set up one on ones to get to know anyone that you would like to learn from at the company.
