Welcome to the fifth edition of the TuSimple Intern Spotlight series!

This series is meant to share stories of interns across TuSimple; about their background, their work, and ultimately, why they decided to join the TuSimple team following their internship. Today’s post is all about Holden, an intern this summer at TuSimple.

Meet Holden!

Holden Waters is a Real Estate Intern at TuSimple for the Summer of 2022, he is working on terminal development as well as prospecting sites. Holden is currently working towards a B.S. in Economics and a Minor in Business Administration from Texas A&M University.

What first sparked your interest in working at TuSimple?

What initially sparked my interest in working at TuSimple was the macro impact of the technology. I’ve always admired autonomous vehicles from afar and when the opportunity presented itself, I had to take the offer immediately. Also, my internship is focused heavily on the real estate side of the business. This is my passion and having the ability to make somewhat of an impact on this logistical solution was the perfect mix!

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

The people I’ve been able to work with have been the most enjoyable part of my internship. From the business departments to the engineers, there have been so many bright and kind people to learn from. Many of these relationships and experiences that I’ve had will help guide me through my future!

What was the impact you’re most proud of to have contributed to during your internship?

The impact that I’m the proudest of during my internship is my curiosity and constant questioning. I’ve asked countless questions to different types of people over the term of my internship and I believe this causes some to look at situations differently. I may not have a lot of experience in my field, but the questions I raise can cause some to think critically about the actions being taken.

Which TuSimple value (Safeguard, Own, Communicate, Collaborate, Innovate) resonated most within your intern team?

As the only intern on my team, the most important TuSimple Value has been Communicate. Communication has been a very valuable asset to our team, in order to reduce inefficiencies in tasks given. Having strong lines of communication also have helped me further my ability to properly use my time efficiently and keep everyone updated.

What advice would you give to aspiring interns and professionals at TuSimple?

I would tell aspiring interns and professionals that asking questions is essential to learning and improving your craft. One of the main purposes of an internship is to make mistakes and ask questions. Without that opportunity,  you may then face issues in more critical times where mistakes have more serious implications. This is a great time to learn, you get a lot of wiggle room as an intern as you are not expected to do everything perfectly!
